"U.S. Was 'Dead Wrong' in Prewar Assessments, Commission Says"

WASHINGTON, March 31 - A report made public this morning concludes that American intelligence agencies were "dead wrong" in almost all of their prewar assessments about the state of unconventional weapons in Iraq, and that on issues of this importance "we simply cannot afford failures of this magnitude."

I haven't read the report, but would be willing to bet there is little or no mention of Douglas Feith, The Office of Special Plans, or the overwhelming pressure that was brought to bear on analysts at the CIA by Cheney and others on behalf of the administration. Blame is probably allocated to the CIA without consideration of those who actively worked to subvert its efforts. Total speculation, I know, but it will be interesting to see how close to the mark I am.

Not that this really matters to the administration. WMD was a justification for the real business at hand, which is controlling the world's oil supply. With the onset of Peak Oil and the outlook for much higher oil prices and much more competition (militarily, politically, and economically) for oil, the administration apparently decided on the "ends justifies the means" approach to geopolitics.
