Baird - Continue to Sacrifice Troops to Honor Troops' Sacrifice

It seems that Congressman Brian Baird has decided to offer up a bit more of an explanation with regard to his recent remarks about extending the so-called surge in Iraq.

Our troops have earned more time

By Brian Baird

Special to The Times

Now, while I would normally use this space to offer my own observations on Rep. Baird’s piece, I believe that thehim over at EFFin’ Unsound does a much better job than I could begin to do. I do have one observation that I cannot let go unsaid.

”Our troops have earned more time” Congressman, our troops have earned leadership. Advancing the Rovian strategy of invoking “our troops” into what is purely a policy discussion is beneath a United States Congressman. What’s next; “Support our Troops – Support the War”?

You say in your Times piece, “… As one soldier said to me, "We have lost so many good people and invested so much, It just doesn't make sense to quit now when we're finally making progress. I want to go home as much as anyone else, but I want this mission to succeed and I'm willing to do what it takes. I just want to know the people back home know we're making progress and support us."” Now I don’t know which soldiers you are exposed to when you go on Bush’s guided tours of Iraq but maybe you should know that there are other soldiers with different points of view. And while you say, ” I do not know the details of what the September report will contain, but I trust and respect Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker.” maybe you should read the original Petraeus Report and ask yourself again if this is the right person to place your confidence in.

Our troops deserve leadership. ”The costs have been horrific for our soldiers, their families, the Iraqi people and the economy. If we keep our troops on the ground we will lose more lives, continue to spend billions each week, and, given the history and complex interests of the region, there is no certainty that our efforts will succeed in the long run. How many lives are you willing to gamble away? ”We are going to have to begin to withdraw troops next spring because our equipment and our soldiers are wearing out.” How many names would you see added to the IWR News before the equipment wears out?

The invasion was wrong. The continuing occupation is wrong. And sir, your current assessment is not going to ever make those things right.

Peace,
Chad (The Left) Shue

John Aravosis (DC) at America Blog will pass along my feelings on this sad example of stupidity coming from a dog and phony Democrat.

" IT'S A MIRACLE!!! Iraq has SUDDENLY gotten MUCH BETTER in the past 24 hours!!! Praise Jesus, it's a freaking MIRACLE!!! Part 2
by John Aravosis (DC)

Three Democratic congressmen have just come back from a dog and pony show in Iraq and suddenly think everything is going just great! Surprise surprise surprise. As I've written before, General Petraeus is known for his sweet-as-candy ability to lie his way out of any crisis, so it's no wonder that his smoke-and-mirrors production of Iraq, the musical, snookered these 3 Dems. Still, it's rather sickening that these Democrats have chosen to go the Joe Lieberman route - letting our troops continue to die for a lie because they don't have the backbone to call this disaster for what it is. First, the clip from the Post, then a few salient questions for our new Democratic Iraq experts:

a few Democratic lawmakers have returned expressing support for a continued troop presence. One of them, Rep. Brian Baird (Wash.), said yesterday that he will no longer vote for binding troop withdrawal time lines....

Last Friday, Baird told the Olympian, a newspaper in his district, that he now believes the United States should stay in the country as long as necessary to ensure stability.

That followed comments by Rep. Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.) suggesting that his trip to Iraq made him more flexible in his search for a bipartisan accord on the future U.S. role in the conflict. "If anything, I'm more willing to work to find a way forward," he told reporters late last month.

Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fla.), who was with McNerney, told his local paper that the troop increase "has really made a difference and really has gotten al-Qaeda on their heels."

Gee, what great news. So I'm assuming the following is true regarding these Dems' visit to Iraq:

1. They weren't stuck inside the Green Zone like every other codel.
2. When leaving the Green Zone, if they left at all, they didn't have massive security, including helicopters and dozens of US troops, just like John McCain had.
3. They didn't have to wear their kevlar vests even inside the US embassy because things have gotten so dangerous.
4. The facts they have backing up their assertions that the surge has "made a difference" has nothing to do with Al Anbar province, since Al Anbar wasn't included in the surge. This is an important point, as it's the only real success that Petraeus ever points to in order to justify the surge - a province the surge didn't cover. I seriously hope these congressmen don't dare mention Al Anbar.

As for Congressman Baird, I'm rather shocked that he is now supporting the permanent stationing of 171,000 US troops in Iraq. I can't imagine that even HIS district supports that. But that's what he said. So long as the troops are needed for stability, they should stay - period, no ifs ands or buts. Well, that would be forever, under the current estimates. Is the congressman okay with our troops fighting and dying forever in Iraq if stability is never within reach?"

I talk to John through emails once in awhile and I know he wouldn't mind the cross post quote.

I wrote a letter to Baird tonight.
I am sure who ever may read it will realize I am serious. As well as many other folks are!

Speak your mind!Use your brain!

Hope you're feeling better Ozy! Other than your peccadillo of going off on Democrats, well, yes. What you said.

Baird is a great Democrat and I'm glad he's there. I disagree with him on this for the on-the-ground reasons you so eloquently mention.

Thank You Chantel,

I am slowly recovering. I would like to point out I don't just go off on Democrats in general. I ,as you say "go off", on Democrats who I feel need to be watched closely for they seem to be sacrificing Democratic principles for political expediency.

Fortunately there are only a handful of so-so Dems who need to be kept on a short leash!
These Democrats behavior is unfairly making our excellent ones look bad.
Accountability in the party will help insure the credibility of the Democratic Party as a whole.

If you like Baird thats all well and good but here is yet another one of these incumbents who need to be kicked to the curb.

The new darling Joe Lieberman right wing pundit Brian Baird of Washington State. Superman say it isn't so!

Discussion?

Thank You

PS Maybe we should check changes in his district ratio Dems to Repukes?

Better yet his bank accounts?
