MoveOn Moves Forward

MoveOn.org released the following statement and announced the following action in response to the US Senate's vote to repudiate an ad that dared to expose the politicising of our military in the name of Gen. Petraeus and yet sits silently as Rep. John Boehner denigrates the memory of those who have given their lives ("a small price") for the lie that is Iraq:

"The U.S. Senate just told you to sit down and be quiet. They passed a resolution condemning MoveOn.org and it has one purpose: to intimidate all of us who care about responsibly ending this war. They wanted to send a message that anyone who speaks unpleasant truths about this war will pay. To make everyone--especially politicians--think twice before they accuse the administration of lying.
We can't let that happen, so we're letting Congress know that they're not going to intimidate us. Can you sign on to this statement?
A compiled petition with your individual comment will be presented to your Senators and Representative."

Full petition text:

"I will not be quiet, I will fight back, and I will keep speaking out until Congress forces an exit plan for this awful war."

I signed the petition and gave $25 to MoveOn. I'm also on board with this strategy.

[UPDATE 9/21/07] Just curious: I wonder if the Senate will be repudiating CENTCOM Commander, Admiral William Fallon soon over these remarks in reference to his subordinate, General David Petraeus:

"Fallon told Petraeus that he considered him to be "an ass-kissing little chickenshit" and added, "I hate people like that..."

Meh. No one said moveon had no right to speak. They said that what moveon chose to say was reprehensible. And congress let moveon know that they wouldn't intimidate congress.

And the beat goes on.

If CENTCOM buys adtime and plays that quote repeatedly then I'm sure congress would want to distance itself, yup.

Those two things you compared - - they are not the same.

General MacArthur was fired by Truman. General Powell admits he lied at United Nations. Had he any integrity he could have prevented this endless and mindless slaughter. We all know about Westmoreland.

Criticising a General whether in war or peace is a very democratic act. It's been done before. Petraeus is carrying water. Our troops are brave and we all support them. We don't support Patraeus b.s. and we don't support the war. There's a difference and some are lumping it all into patriotic sloganeering.

Our wonderful General Shinseki was removed as soon as he suggested to Bush & Co that there were many political implications in re: Iraq, and we needed far more men and a real strategy. Bush fired him. This is OK?

The Surge is absolute propaganda created to give the illusion that a fight can still save our misbegotten efforts in Iraq. The money pit of corruption given to mercenaries and "contractors" who are responsible to no one has cost tax payers billions. The illusion the Surge creates is something GOP hopes lasts long enough to turn this misery over to the next "regime".

Patraeus or no other general for that matter is above reproach. They are paid by the American taxpayer. Our imperial President is hiding behind the demagogic shield of 'General Patriotism' and using any criticism or rejection of Patraeus as treason.

The next step is a military coup from the right flank of the GOP.

They're working in California trying to create a special election that will gerrymander voting districts to favor GOP no matter what the popular State vote is, thereby throwing the election to GOP. Electoral college would have to recognize GOP as winner of California, even if popular vote is Democratic. Where
is the outrage about THIS??
