Welcome to the New Amerikan Police State

WASHINGTON D.C. – Sen. John Kerry issued the following statement today, in response to the arrest of a student at the University of Florida.

“In 37 years of public appearances, through wars, protests and highly emotional events, I have never had a dialogue end this way. I believe I could have handled the situation without interruption, but I do not know what warnings or other exchanges transpired between the young man and the police prior to his barging to the front of the line and their intervention. I asked the police to allow me to answer the question and was in the process of responding when he was taken into custody. I was not aware that a taser was used until after I left the building. I hope that neither the student nor any of the police were injured. I regret enormously that a good healthy discussion was interrupted."

Nice comdemnation Senator..........

[UPDATE 09/18/07]

Apparently certain "centrist" Democrats find it acceptable to taser unarmed, outnumbered, and obviously subdued people if they annoy you. The next thing you know she will be suggesting a "free speech zone" so that protesters are kept out of the line of sight of the ...... oh wait, that idea has already been taken.

"There are rules for publicly expressing one's self in a forum environment, and this kid violated them. He was asked to sit down, he was asked to stop talking, and he was told to leave. He refused all three requests and got tased. I have a hard time coming up with any reaction other than 'so what'."

Now go back to the video and see for yourself at what point during those "three requests" the young man "got tased." I count five uniformed officers, the detainee was on the floor with at least one hand in handcuffs. If this is what Chantel (and her friends Hillary and the DLC) find acceptable in America, no wonder we can launch a pre-emptive strike on a country that posed no real or imminent threat to ours.

Hmmm...the video conveniently picks up after the jerk pushed his way to the front.

No one answered this, by the way, not that I expect such a thing:

Do moderate Dems show up at Kucinich events to heckle? Would left wing extremists be supportive if some DLC member tried to shout down a 'progressive' speaker at an event hosted by that 'progressive'? Would far leftys let a centrist hold the microphone for as long as she wanted because the centrist had a right to speak?

I'd guess the answer is 'no', because extremists tend to get off on their self-imposed 'powerless' status which they believe gives them the right to shout and yell and fight the power and all that.

My kids do the same thing when we tell them it's bedtime, though I admit we don't tase them. We usually just ground them. :)

Chantel,

If you pay attention to the video you will realize that Senator Kerry is finishing his answer to a previous question. There is no accompanying sounds that would indicate a disruption was taking place as the "jerk pushed his way to the front." You have no evidence that he did such a thing yet you continue to claim he did. Do I detect a bias?

As to your question about "moderate Dems" heckling Dennis Kucinich; why would they? You ask, "Would far leftys let a centrist hold the microphone for as long as she wanted because the centrist had a right to speak?"

As a matter of fact at last years convention in Yakima, when Maria Cantwell got up to address the body, a chant of "No Iraq War" brought her to the stage. Once she began to speak, the chant stopped and she was afforded the opportunity to deliver her remarks unhindered.

So I am left to wonder why, if tasering (today's equivilent of billy clubbing someone - only worse) is good enough for this "jerk", why not your children if they exhibit the same behavior?

Ah, Chad. The article states that he had pushed his way to the front. I quoted from it in the comments over on my blog.

This was a Q&A forum and the guy was disrupting it. The only way your indignant posture holds up is if he were a completely innocent bystander just asking a polite question when he was suddenly tased. That's not what happened, but if it had then you'd be right about this.

As for tasering my children..haha... um, because they're better behaved than that? :~)

Chantel,

I guess I trust my own eyes and ears (via the video) and you choose to simply repeat whatever it says in the papers.

Oh and you say, "As for tasering my children..haha... um, because they're better behaved than that? :~)"

Yet in your previous comment you said, "My kids do the same thing when we tell them it's bedtime, though I admit we don't tase them."

I guess you make whatever argument fits your purpose at the time.

That's total crap!

I think the cops who tazed this guy should be brought up on charges! Period!
I hope they sue the hell out of the security here!

Talk about over the top!

This is the kind of BS we are getting in this country because people will not stand up for their brothers and sisters who are out there trying to get the hard questions answered.
I don't blame Kerry here but I would have like to have seen him answer the kid's questions after the fact!

I didn't see him push his way to the front. What I saw was him on the mic asking 3 questions that needed to be answered by the Senator!

If we allow this kind of suppression to continue we will lose all rights to free speech!

I'm getting a little annoyed by the lefty disparaging coming from some folks on these blogs who consider themselves Democrats. This is the kind of bile I expect from the right wingers.I may have to start responding in kind for my own sense of Justice.

Bottom line here is that security here should be investigated and held accountable if they handled this situation inappropriately!
Also there were too many smiles on the security guards faces for my taste.

I promise you I would file a law suit on this puppy. The video speaks volumes.

What would have happened if they gave the guy 3 to 5 minutes to finish his questions? By my watch he got 1 minute 22 seconds hardly unreasonable!
3 to 5 minutes for a taxpaying voter.

He was not heckling ! I want Kerry answer the damn questions! If thats what is going to be waiting for me I guess I will bring my own security and a couple of Lawyers.

I am not kidding.

So it's OK for lefties to disparage centrists, but not OK for centrists to criticize lefties. Got it. What a finely tuned sense of justice you have!

Well, Ozy, I suppose now you understand how we Democrats feel when we're attacked by people who put what they call 'principles' (meaning their opinions) above the Democratic party, then work against Democrats.

I'm a Democrat first, Ozy. You're a "progressive" first. There's a difference in that your way leads to GOP win after GOP win.

As I said over in the comments on my blog, Chad, if you're going to pretend that it was the questions rather than the behavior that led to the tasing then we'll likely not find common ground.

And yeah, I believe a child that acts like a child in her own home is less deserving of being subdued and tased than a grownup acting like a child in a public forum with a prominent national figure. I guess I'm just a blonde that way.

Chantel,

I am beginning to worry that you do not read before you write. No where in what I have written have I said or even implied that the issue is over the questions that were asked. My concern all along has been that the detainee was "in custody" BEFORE he was tasered. Abuse of Power, Excessive Force. That is my issue.

As for public forums where there are "prominent national figure"s... I believe that is the reason why our Founding Fathers fought so hard for out freedom of speech. It should not matter who is at the event. Was the young man rude? Yes. Was the young man "out of order"? Arguably, yes. Did he deserve to be tasered AFTER he had been wrestled to the ground by FIVE OFFICERS? HELL NO! A taser is intended to subdue a suspect so that he or she may be taken in to custody - not administered as PUNISHMENT after the fact.

I hope you don't raise your children to believe that this is acceptable in a free society.

By the way, how is the view from your office?

Ah, never mind. I see where you got that. :~) Nope, I don't work for that organization. Tell me, Chad, is it OK to be a centrist and have opinions that differ from the standard 'progressive' line? Or should we all be hunted down and tracked? *sigh*

Chantel,

Do I detect a note of paranoia there?

Haha. Now that was genuinely funny, Mr. Shue. :)

Someone once said that the deepest fear men have is that women will reject them, while the deepest fear women have is that men will kill them. So yes, a bit paranoid sometimes. But given my posts about the paranoia of the far left, your comment was very funny indeed.
