No New Funding

According to The Hill, George Bush has issued his latest challenge at the feet of the “new Democratic majority” in Congress. On Monday, Bush sent forward a $196.4 billion supplemental spending bill to continue killing Americans, Iraqis, and Afghanis. Because there is no history of resistance from Congress in the almost five years of the Iraq debacle, Bush feels extremely confident that he will get whatever he asks for.

To ensure that Democrats continue to cave on every funding demand that he puts before them, Bush continues to employ the “support the troops” rhetoric that has replaced any reasoned debate between the branches of government. In sending up this latest funding scheme Bush says,

“I often hear that war critics oppose my decisions, but still support the troops. Well, I’ll take them at their word — and this is the chance to show it, that they support the troops.”

Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, who came into the leadership position in January amid claims that the days of a “blank check Congress” were over, said that the Senate would hold the funding bill, “up to the light of day and fight for the change in strategy and redeployment of troops that is long overdue.”

I guess the question remains; what is the best way to support the troops? In my mind it is time to stop the “new funding” and bring them home. Before anyone tells me about 60 votes or 67 votes to over ride; if the Democrats want to lead, they will simply let this bill die due to lack of daylight. Do not bring it to the floor unless it contains language that brings the troops home.
