A Bad Sign for Race Relations in Snohomish

Apparently Snohomish City Council members Swede Johnson and Doug Thorndike aren’t able to distinguish between legitimate city business and their personal anti-immigrant biases. According to reports that first appeared in the Snohomish County Tribune on March 3rd and the Everett Herald just this morning, the two elected officials, supposedly in the context of a debate over a proposal for new “gateway signs” intended to welcome visitors to their city, decided to take the opportunity to express their perceptually discriminatory views on immigration.

R.C. "Swede" Johnson

According to Tribune reporter Jessica Sparks,

” A project to build a sign to welcome visitors to the city of Snohomish has stalled, but last month two city officials revived the conversation by e-mailing an antiimmigration joke that suggests Mexicans in the United States are here to take advantage of social programs.”

The “joke”, in fact, was a photo of some suggested signage that might be considered to be Thorndike’s and Johnson’s view of the increase in the numbers of Hispanic to the county and more specifically to the city of Snohomish.

The email was sent to fellow city council members Melody Clemans and Karen Guzak, both proponents of the gateway sign proposal. The proposal is currently on hold and is not a part of the 2008 council agenda. The email contained no text and was sent with the subject heading: “Gateway Signs.”

While Thorndike, who sent the original images to Johnson, has not issued any comment to the media Johnson has defended the email as his attempt to ”to show how powerful an image can be.” Clemans has called the image “racist and bigoted” and was quick to point out the disconnect in the messages being sent.

”I do not understand using such a distasteful and discriminatory message to make a point about the power of signs,” she wrote in an e-mail. “Using inflammatory depictions of immigration issues has no relationship to the issue of a gateway sign for our community.”

According to the article in the Everett Herald there was some discussion of this email at the Snohomish City Council meeting on Tuesday.

” The image is discriminatory, Snohomish resident John First said at a City Council meeting Tuesday where the e-mail was discussed.

"I was embarrassed that it was being circulated by council members," said First, 49. "I was upset to see it because of the message that it implies."

About a dozen people at the meeting commented on the image, most saying it was offensive and inappropriate.”

Also at the Tuesday meeting was Snohomish County Democrats Chair and Snohomish resident, Mark Hintz. Yesterday Mark sent me a copy of the statement that he read to the council on Tuesday (and has sent on as a Press Release as a member of the Diversity Committee of the Snohomish County Democrats.

” The Diversity Committee of the Snohomish County Democratic Central Committee takes a stand against “white privilege” in our county. Recently two Snohomish City council members used the internet in an inappropriate manner and must be held accountable for their actions.

These two members of the council, Council Member Thorndike and Council Member Johnson recently sent an inappropriate email message to another Council Member that was an example of “white privilege”.

“White privilege is the advantages given freely to white people for no other reason than being born with the “right” skin color. If their skin color had not been white, they would not have been making these jokes. This is no way for an American to treat another American.

Mr. Thorndike and Mr. Johnson have left question marks with most people about their decision-making process. If either were my employee, this behavior would not be tolerated. As an elected official
(Ed. Note: Hintz is an elected Fire Commissioner in Snohomish County) I expect a higher standard of leadership than what they displayed.

It is time that this attitude is removed from our society and the respect of all people be truly adopted.”

Johnson and Thorndike were not without their supporters.

” Kirk Williams, 50, of Snoho¬mish said he thought the image similar to political cartoons in newspapers and said it raised a legitimate point of view about U.S. immigration issues.

"It's not that these people don't like Hispanics," Williams said of Johnson and Thorndike. "These men aren't like that."”

I would like to give these men the benefit of the doubt but, when asked by Jessica Sparks at the Snohomish Tribune if these images reflect his personal views of Mexicans, Johnson’s reply was

”My personal views are my personal views.”

While we have presidential candidates being asked to distance themselves from the comments of others, I think it is not unreasonable to ask elected officials to take more responsibility for their own actions and statements. It is absolutely ridicules for anyone in Johnson's position to expect reasonable people to believe that the images he has passed along to his fellow council members has any bearing in the context of a proposal for a sign to WELCOME people to the city (and all of its people) he was elected to represent.

Our Continuing National Tragedy

“The evidence indicates that Iraq is reconstituting its nuclear weapons program. Saddam Hussein has held numerous meetings with Iraqi nuclear scientists, a group he calls his "nuclear mujahideen" -- his nuclear holy warriors. Satellite photographs reveal that Iraq is rebuilding facilities at sites that have been part of its nuclear program in the past. Iraq has attempted to purchase high-strength aluminum tubes and other equipment needed for gas centrifuges, which are used to enrich uranium for nuclear weapons.” – George W. Bush; Cincinnati Museum Center - Cincinnati Union Terminal - Cincinnati, Ohio, October 7, 2002

“Knowing these realities, America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.” George W. Bush – Oct. 8, 2002

Toward a More Perfect Union?

I have stated my concerns about Barack Obama's ability to win in a general election campaign and to lead if he were to be elected president. I have never faulted his oratory nor his charisma. What follows is what I consider to be one of the most important speeches by a public official since the days of my wide eyed youth - the days in which Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, and Robert F. Kennedy moved a nation with their words.

Piling on the Bandwagon

”We're not going to get into house-to-house fighting in Baghdad. We may have to take out buildings, but we're not going to have a bloodletting of trading American bodies for Iraqi bodies…” John McCain – Sep. 29, 2002

”…Saddam Hussein has worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability, and his nuclear program. He has also given aid, comfort, and sanctuary to terrorists, including Al Qaeda members…” Hillary Clinton – Oct. 10, 2002

"Giving peace a chance only gives Saddam Hussein more time to prepare for war on his terms, at a time of his choosing, in pursuit of ambitions that will only grow as his power to achieve them grows…" John McCain – Oct.11, 2002

The Drum Beat Grows Louder...

”The Iraqi regime has violated all of those obligations. It possesses and produces chemical and biological weapons. It is seeking nuclear weapons. It has given shelter and support to terrorism and practices terror against its own people.” George W. Bush – Oct. 8, 2002

”We have learned that Iraq has trained al Qaeda members in bomb making, poisons, and deadly gases.” George W. Bush – Oct. 8, 2008

”There is a reason. We have experienced the horror of September 11. We have seen that those who hate America are willing to crash airplanes into buildings full of innocent people. Our enemies would be no less willing -- in fact they would be eager -- to use a biological, or chemical, or a nuclear weapon.

Knowing these realities, America must not ignore the threat gathering against us. Facing clear evidence of peril, we cannot wait for the final proof -- the smoking gun -- that could come in the form of a mushroom cloud.”

Continuing the Setup

"[The CIA possesses] solid reporting of senior-level contacts between Iraq and al-Qaeda going back a decade." -- CIA Director George Tenet in a written statement released Oct. 7, 2002 and echoed in that evening's speech by President Bush.

"We've learned that Iraq has trained al-Qaeda members in bomb-making and poisons and deadly gases ... Alliance with terrorists could allow the Iraqi regime to attack America without leaving any fingerprints." -- President Bush, Oct. 7, 2002

"Our conservative estimate is that Iraq today has a stockpile of between 100 and 500 tons of chemical weapons agent. That is enough to fill 16,000 battlefield rockets." -- Secretary of State Colin Powell, Feb. 5 2003, in remarks to the UN Security Council.

More "Free Trade" on the Horizon?

Our friend David Sirota notes that George Bush is going to push yet another so-called Free Trade deal through Congress soon.

BUSH TO PUSH COLOMBIA FTA - WILL THE CLINTON MACHINE HELP?

By David Sirota
March 12th, 2008 - 4:19pm ET

Reuters reports that "President George W. Bush will send a free trade agreement with Colombia to Congress shortly after the March recess for a vote sometime this year, the top U.S. trade official said on Wednesday." The Politico expands on just how confrontational a move this is, noting also that "a coalition of business groups pushing for the trade deal is forming “war rooms” and ramping up lobbying efforts in anticipation of the coming battle."”

Now, as the title of David’s piece indicates, he is more concerned about how Hillary Clinton will play this round (considering her “moratorium on trade” rhetoric during the campaign, I can’t imagine how she could play any part in moving this forward) but what I will be watching closely for any movement from my own congressional delegation – especially in light of this.

The Set-up

"Simply stated, there is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt that he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies, and against us." --Vice President Dick Cheney, Aug. 26, 2002

"(Saddam) has amassed large clandestine stocks of biological weapons . . . including anthrax and botulism toxin and possibly smallpox. His regime has amassed large clandestine stockpiles of chemical weapons, including VX and sarin and mustard gas . . . (he) has at this moment stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons." --Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, before the House Armed Services Committee, Sept.18, 2002.

Remains of Missing Marine Found in Charlotte County

PUNTA GORDA, FL (AP) -- Authorities say a body found over the weekend in Charlotte County is a missing Iraq War veteran.

A sheriff's spokesman says a medical examiner confirmed that the remains are of former Marine Eric Hall. A cause of death has not been determined.

Dozens of volunteers scoured the area on Florida's west coast, and searchers located a body on Sunday.

The 24-year-old's family has scheduled a memorial service in Florida for Thursday morning. Hall will be buried in Indiana, where he grew up.

He moved to Florida shortly before he went missing in early February. Relatives feared he was hallucinating and believed he was back in Iraq. He had been wounded in a bomb explosion in June 2005 and later granted medical retirement.

U.S. Denies U.N. Torture Chief Iraq Access

GENEVA, March 12, 2008

(CBS/AP) The U.N. torture investigator said Tuesday that American officials are refusing him access to U.S.-run detention facilities in Iraq even though he has received credible reports that conditions there have improved.

Manfred Nowak, one of the global body's independent human rights experts, said Iraqi officials had agreed in principle that he can visit the country later this year. British officials have also agreed to let him visit detainees held by their forces, he said.

"The U.K. said yes, the U.S. said no," Nowak told reporters in Geneva, adding that he was still hoping to win approval for a visit to American-run facilities before deciding whether to travel to Iraq.

Iraq refugee crisis 'deepening,' US experts say

Published: 3/12/2008

WASHINGTON - Squalid and dangerous conditions, lack of shelter and scarcity of food are threatening to worsen the living situation for those displaced by the war in Iraq, refugee experts said Tuesday.

Five years after the US-led invasion of Iraq, experts told a House of Representatives subcommittee hearing that serious problems persist for the 2.5 million people displaced inside Iraq and the two million who have fled to neighboring countries, according to UN figures.

Pentagon cancels release of controversial Iraq report

Posted on Wednesday, March 12, 2008

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon on Wednesday canceled plans for broad public release of a study that found no pre-Iraq war link between late Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the al Qaida terrorist network.

Rather than posting the report online and making officials available to discuss it, as had been planned, the U.S. Joint Forces Command said it would mail copies of the document to reporters — if they asked for it. The report won't be posted on the Internet.

Made in America ....(with foreign and domestic parts)

Has Boeing become the victim of its own desires? Over the past week I have been watching with a certain amount of bemusement as my congressional delegation and state legislative leaders have been falling all over themselves to express their outrage over the Air Force’s awarding of its next generation refueling tanker deal to Boeing archrival Airbus. In other words, the US Government is outsourcing the contract for these planes to an off-shore company – putting thousands of American jobs at risk.

Now I am certainly sympathetic toward the workers who were counting on this contract to keep them employed and allow them to provide for their families. However, over the years I have been among the steady chorus of constituents who have pleaded with these same government officials (of both parties) to show a bit of restraint over the so-called Free Trade deals that they just can’t seem to pass quickly enough. Having been the victim of outsourcing/off-shoring on two separate occasions, I always approached the issue from a personal perspective only to be rebuffed by two standard lines:

1) “Washington is the most trade dependent state in the country.”

2) “These deals will open new markets for Boeing; the largest employer in our state.”

And so, now that the Air Force has said that they are only basing their award on good business practices and better pricing, “Free Trade” doesn’t seem so appealing.

But the irony doesn’t begin with this deal. The real irony of this story goes back to the decision by Boeing management to outsource the manufacturing of its new “Dreamliner 787.” The countries involved in manufacturing this plane create a supply chain that spans two oceans. It should not be lost on anyone then that the main reason cited by Boeing for the several “setbacks to the delivery schedule” of the Dreamliner has been “problems in the supply chain.”

Maybe the Air Forced assumed that Boeing would employ their new “Assembled in the US with foreign and domestic parts” manufacturing scheme on the new tanker aircraft and decided that, if they were going to get a foreign made airplane anyway, it would be more cost effective to cut out the middle man. Whatever the reason, for Boeing or its congressional surrogates to now cry foul because of outsourcing on the part of the government just doesn’t pass the smell test.

And Now the News......

Every day for almost FIVE YEARS dozens if not hundreds of people have been killed in Iraq. Barack Obama is a black man. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS at least one child in Iraq or the United States has been orphaned. Hillary Clinton is a monster. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS the United States Congress has failed to provide any oversight over the worst foreign policy action in this country’s history – providing George W. Bush a blank check to pursue his legacy as our “War President.” Barack Obama’s middle name is Hussein. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS the United States has engaged in torture and kidnapping in violation of our own as well as international laws. Hillary Clinton almost cried after hearing finding her own voice in New Hampshire. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS the Bush Administration has been severely underfunding veterans care. Barack Obama’s healthcare plan will not mandate coverage to every man, woman, and child in the United States. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS another Iraqi family has been forced to flee their home (with over 4 million displaced to date). Hillary Clinton’s healthcare plan will lead to garnishing the wages of working Americans. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS the American economy has been sliding deeper and deeper into recession due to the trillions of borrowed dollars committed to the continuing occupation of Iraq. Obama wins caucus states. Every day for almost FIVE YEARS the United States has moved closer to attacking Iran. Clinton wins primary states.

On March 19th we will mark the FIVE YEAR anniversary of the United States’ invasion of Iraq. Thanks for noticing.
