The Tyranny of the Minority

There is no question that something has been wrong with American politics for some time now but even people who never pay attention to the sausage making are starting to see what passes for legislating these days and calling foul. I know that the folks who call themselves the “Tea Party” started out with some good intentions and even some reasonable goals but the fact of the matter is they are simply a bunch of anarchists who are content to set the barn afire and just bask in the glow while the inept volunteer fire brigade of Republicans and Democrats piss on each other to put it in an effort to put the fire out. Never before in American history has the tyranny of the minority been the served as it has in recent years…and the entire country will soon be paying the price.

Why are Congress and the White House negotiating a budget when they should simply be voting on an increase to the so-called debt ceiling? Why aren’t they simply debating the validity of a debt ceiling? The 14^th Amendment makes it crystal clear that “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned.” The debt in question is debt authorized by a vote of a previous congress and signed into law by the President of the United States. It would appear that the minority is creating a false crisis in an effort to have a redo on a vote that they previously lost. What is worse is that the majority seems to be ok with that.
